After three years of hard work and creative effort, never released its debut EP, called ‘not here’ in 2007. Formed in early 2004, never is a Brisbane collaboration between Rudi Weber from Japunga, Post-Life Disorder and Fat [drums], members of 'esoteric’ Andy Farrell [guitar] and Cat Andrews [bass guitar] and Rowena Specht-Whyte [vocals].
Jason NAHRUNG of The Courier Mail describes the band's debut EP 'not here' as "a polished collection, with plenty of chop and change, and fetching flourishes of guitar and effects. It is underpinned by drums and bass, the whole an exercise in artistic restraint, all the pieces fitting together to tell the story – and no more. And then there's Specht-Whyte's voice, ranging from a throaty growl to a soaring high. When she says the band is influenced by Tool, Muse and A Perfect Circle, it doesn't surprise."
The EP was recorded at Black Box Recording, mixed by Jeff Lovejoy and mastered by Matthew Gray Mastering. All songs written by never; cover art designed by Rudi. As the sole lyricist, Rowena describes the EP as essentially about the psychology of the human animal.
Since launching the band in July 2005, never has had no shortage of live shows, playing a headlining position for its fifth gig and playing at the Indie Temple’s closing down show in its first six months of live performances. Throughout the last two years, never has played at numerous Brisbane venues, including Club Phoenix, The Globe Theatre, The Living Room, The Troubadour, Her Majesty’s Bar/The Basement, The Rev and The Indie Temple, now regularly bringing 100 plus fans to a show.
never has played with well known bands such as Dead Letter Circus, Lynchmada, The Follow [Sydney], Lump [Gold Coast], This Collision, Arcane, The Kidney Thieves, i nation, Orochi [Melbourne], ECM [Sydney], The Borderland [Adelaide], Nucleus [Sydney], The Mercy Dolls and Dead Day Sun.
The Official EP Launch was held at Club Phoenix in Brisbane on Friday, 25 May 2007, with an incredible line-up supporting never; opening with Nucleus [Sydney], then The Kidney Thieves and Arcane. To add to the show, never commenced its set with a guest dancer, Lindsey Jackson, performing a contemporary dance which made use of sillhouettes, choreographed to one of never's new songs.
Sales of the EP have surpassed expectations and continue to rise. never toured Sydney, headlining at Club Blink, in October 2007 as well as playing the Alive in OZ Festival and the Australia Day 2008 Festival in Brisbane!
