Describe your music
I’m rubbish at answering this question. It’s pop music I guess. Catchy hooks and lyrics about stuff. See… rubbish!
How do you go about writing a song? Lyrics or music first?
Mostly I just sit down and play. There doesn’t seem to be a huge difference between writing a song and just mucking around. Not to begin with at least. You sit down and play with a keyboard or a guitar or whatever and eventually you hear something you like and you play it over and over. That’s how it starts I guess. For me lyrics and music tend to come at the same time, one informs the other.
Who would you most like to tour with or learn from as a songwriter?
I’m not sure. I’m a pretty slow learner, they’d have to be patient. When I think of my favourite Australian songwriters I think of guys like Paul Kelly and Tim Freedman. Also not quite as Australian songwriters like Neil Finn, Sufjan Stevens, Bruce Cockburn or Thom Yorke. To tour with any of those cats would be amazing.
What was the last CD you bought? what made you buy it?
A few months ago I bought The Shins Oh, Inverted World. I’d heard a few of their tracks and was really into it. They have something really unique and beautiful going on there.
What do you do when you're not making music?
I work as a barista in a café in Canberra. Outside of that I’m into film making so I’m working on a couple of screenplays. I also spend a lot of time cooking, shouting at the television and hanging out with family and friends.
What have you got planned for the future?
I’m currently recording an album with some help from the Foundation for young Australians. It’s a pop record about mortality. It will be out later in the year.
Australian music is...
Really diverse. Also, the Australian music scene has a really healthy Good Stuff to Shit Stuff ratio.
