Tell us about your music - how did you develop your sound?
My songwriting became Coach Bombay when I owned up to the fact that pop music is the most pleasing and rewarding thing to create. My music is characterised by a devotion to melodies. If a melody isn’t the best it can be, it won’t be used. If a lyric doesn’t fit the chosen melody perfectly, it won’t be used. My sound is made up of thumpy beats, bright (and sometimes distorted) synths, as many hooks as possible, and double or quadruple tracked vocals with another 8-12 layers of harmony vocals, when needed. Despite writing most songs on guitar, I try to resist the urge to use it on recordings.

Coach Bombay is a ‘bedroom project’ – how do you maintain a relationship with the wider music community? What about a live show?
As a person, my relationship with the music community is maintained by playing in another band called Pretty Strangers. By playing regular gigs (and sticking around to see the supports/headliners) I see so much great music, and meet so many delightful musicians & music lovers. As Coach Bombay, thus far my music has been heard, accessed and shared mainly through the interwebs, word of mouth, and the occasional patch of radio play. The music is first and foremost made for the stereo, whether it be in your car, headphones, at a party, or while you do the dishes. However, the live incarnation of Coach Bombay is imminent. Some mystery Melbourne musicians will be joining me on this adventure. Watch this space.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?
"So you want to be a rock n roll star, then listen now to what I say. Just get an electric guitar, then take some time and learn how to play. And with your hair swung right and your pants too tight, it's gonna be all right." - The Byrds

Tell us about the bands and people in the Melbourne music scene that inspire you.
Melbourne itself inspires me. On any night of the week there are about 20 decent live music venues open, each with 3 or 4 acts playing - it’s ridiculous. There’s about 1 musician for every punter (for better or for worse). My pick of the litter would be Worlds End Press, Kins, Big Scary, Little Red and Pikelet. I’m also legitimately inspired by the ravers and 14 year-old school kids that brought the “Melbourne Shuffle” to the world.

What’s coming up in 2011?
My style is to release every worthy song as soon as it’s finished. That’s why there are already 3 songs out from my 3rd EP, “POPS”, including the title track. The full EP will be finished around Spring, at which time I’ll move on to number 4, or maybe an album if the gods favour me. 2011 will also see the debut of Coach Bombay in a live, full band setting – 2 years in the making!

Australian music is?
The Bronze Medal. I once developed a hypothetical with some friends called ‘The Rock Olympics’. Basically, it’s a massive one day festival where each country gets 1 stage, and has to choose which bands/artists (past or present, preserved in their prime, brought back from the dead if needs be) go on, and in which order (i.e. who gets the headline slot, etc.). Then, like any festival, the attendees choose which stage to go to and when. The winning country is determined by the crowds throughout the day. I believe Australia would get the Bronze Medal, which is pretty damn impressive.
