Tell us about your music - how did you develop your sound?
‘Out of destruction comes creation.’
I (Julian) was originally a drummer in several bands. After years of bringing songs to the table that consistently got rejected I began Greenthief. Like most writers, the starting point of your sound would be your influences. For myself this would include a lot of what was going on in the 70’s in England as well as more modern bands such as NIN, Jeff Buckley and Rage Against the Machine. The bases of the tracks are written by myself. Sometimes they are complete and other times the form is brought in to be jammed out. Due to a number of factors at the time, I ended up playing all the instruments on the latest EP ('Retribution') myself, minus the bass. I am hoping with the new solid line up this will not be the case for future records.

What are your earliest memories of seeing live Australian music?
My father began taking me to see live music when I was 13. Every Friday night we would go to the RE Pub (Toowong), where we would stand behind the wooden fence where the band played. He used also take me on Tuesday nights to watch jazz at Ric's Cafe where he would ask the owner if I could sit at the back. This was the highlight of my week and was inspiration towards one day performing myself.

How would you describe a Greenthief live show?
I would like to think that seeing Greenthief live takes you on a journey rather then hearing a collection of songs. This would definitely be influenced from what was going on in England during the 70’s with bands such as Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. The music can be really intense but at the same time there is a sense of fragility to the sound.

Tell us about the bands, producers and people in the Brisbane music community that inspire you.
Pink Bullet, New Manic Spree, The Royal Artillery and Tinian's Boy. We call our collective 'The Brotherhood' as we are all good friends who play in like-minded bands. We all meet through jamming with each other, sharing rehearsal rooms, having outer body experiences etc...

What’s coming up in 2011?
2011 is going to be a big one as we are trying to cramp as much in before the world ends next year. We are in the middle of an 18 date east coast tour which has been epic. When we return we will focus on writing new tracks. We are going to smash out a single in the up coming months and do a run of shows down the east coast in September/October.

Australian music is?
Ok, not to be cocky or anything but it is a lot better then most of the stuff overseas. I have been fortunate enough to do some traveling over the years including hitting the iconic venues in LA's Sunset Blvd; let’s just say The Doors don’t have a weekly residency at the Whisky A Go Go anymore... (yes I realise Jim is dead)
