Hey, I'm an amateur critic based in Sydney's south. Formerly known as "macca07" (it's still me!). As much as I love eccentric and adventurous sounds, I'm still a sucker for a well-structured pop song (which can still be eccentric and adventurous, of course). Shameless plug, but you can find my own songs by typing in 'Paul Macadam'. My debut album was released on Christmas Day 2010, and it's called "Coffee Break Bachelor". NOTE: I'm happy to take requests to review songs via Facebook, but please appreciate that it might take a while for me to get around to them. Cheers :)

That opening chord sets the scene so well (out of curiosity, what the hell IS that chord? More people should use it). The kick drum accents on "killin' all the fellas" made for another nice bit of musical symbolism. Smartly written, smoothly performed.

There's a sweet Dead Weather thing happening in the verses, helped along by a wonderfully addictive bassline. While I like the change of pace, I reckon it might've been best to save it for the last chorus, rather than for both. The transition just seems a tad jarring on record, though I'd like to hear it / see you guys live some day. That bassline is still in my head, and probably will be all night. This is a good thing.

I like how the bass is pushed right up in the mix - too often in modern rock it's hidden away in the corner / borderline inaudible, so it's refreshing to hear that. On a similar note the vocals might be about 10% too loud. Felt like the chorus was a bit too similar to a couple of other sections (or maybe the other way round). The bridge at 1:25 was a sweet change though - triplets are an underused weapon, and they're used really well here.

One of the other reviews for this song noted how "warm" it feels, an appropriate choice of words that I'll echo here. You've got a really distinctive style. Great harmonies, thoughtfully funny lyrics.

Interesting variety of textures here - I'm a sucker for fuzzy bass but it's used particularly well here. Gorgeous harmony vocals - they make a nice contrast with the slightly distorted lead (which I would've liked to hear a little louder in the mix, but that's only a minor detail). Must have been tempting to layer dozens of guitars over the ending along with the solo, but I reckon the song benefits from the extra spaciousness you gave it. Nice stuff

(actually 3.5 stars if I could) Great to hear strong instrumental performances - folk pop-ish bands aren't renowned for it, and it's definitely a strength of yours. Would like to have heard a bit more development through the choruses, especially the last - just seems to be lacking a little in variation. Getting a nice Bob Evans vibe here though- "Goodnight Newcastle!"

Sounds traditional but feels distinctly modern - just as true of this song as many others of yours. The extra bar before the first chorus was a nice subtle surprise... I didn't notice it until the third listen. It builds up that extra bit of anticipation for the chorus, and keeps the second one fresh by dropping the bar out next time around. If it were slightly earlier than 2 am I'd be blasting this for sure, but it carries through just as well at a lower volume.

Not often you hear a pop song in 6/4 time - that alone wouldn't be noteworthy on its own, but this is fantastically catchy at the same, well, time! Good to hear that bass wandering across octaves all the way through. Nice accents after the second chorus, reminded me of "Roxanne". Would have liked the last chorus to vary more from the ones before it, but that's just a minor suggestion.

Often a move to a fancier studio can lead to drowning in unnecessary ornaments, but the enhanced production here adds a new layer to your music. Texture is the key here - it succeeds in feeling tense and spacious at the same time. Lovely cello lines near the end, too!

I just listened to this five times in a row, maybe to make sure it was real, I don't know. Speaking of five, there's no exaggeration in the star rating. Tremendously moving song.
