Matheson hail from Provincial Victoria – a sleepy gold mining city named Ballarat. The geographical connection is evident throughout their songs, with tales of isolation interspersed with images of the countryside.
Musically, Matheson deftly tread the lines between intricate ballads of love & loss, alt-country waltzes and straight-up, riff-laden rockers. Aaron Matthews, the band's lyricist and guitarist, delivers songs like Safe For Now and River & The Sun with delicacy and immediacy. Yet the band quickly turns that on its head through powerful numbers like To Drown Amongst The Dead and I Was Her Man. Matthews' lyrical poetry conjures images of Colonial Australia on 1859, and nights spent in alcohol-soaked bars on Mary Lynn.
On bass, Mark Perry weaves a wonderful low-end tapestry upon which the guitars float. Steve Martin's work behind the drum kit helps provide a light and a shade, letting the rockers rock and the rollers roll.
