SAM HALES

He may be just 17 by Brisbane singer-songwriter and multi instrumentalist Sam Hales knows exactly where he’s going.

Drawn to the work of artists like Josh Pyke, bon Iver and Band of Horses, Hales says it’s the raw honesty of stripped-back acoustic music that has him hooked.

“Definitely less is more,” he explains. “I love that style of music because you can sing along…and that acoustic sound is so honest, true and warm.”

Despite his years, Hales has already followed a wildly diverse artistic path to arrive where he is today – a journey that includes acting and musical performance.

Drumming since Year 3, he has sung in choirs and an a Capella barbershop group, played in his school big band, studied the flute, taught himself guitar and occasionally “dabbles” with the piano.

Now as a songwriter Hales is really finding his feet. Drawing inspiration from the world around him, his songs are observational and infused with a very direct sense of humour.

And his rare commitment to forging a music career was recognised recently when he was awarded a Creative Generations Excellent Award by the Queensland Government.

Right now Sam is working with a new band line-up. He Hopes to be hitting the studio in late 2010 to record his Debut EP.
