Harlequin League are essentially a rock band with some demented pop elements. Organs and Synth bass make up a big part of their sound which gives it a little quirk.
Interview: 4 December 2008
Tell us about your music.
Well we are a 4 piece band, we play a kind demented indie/pop with some heavier rock influences. We tend to write some pretty classic pop/rock sounding stuff but like to offset it with some more abrasive indie tracks as well, we think it is pretty important to have variation and dynamic in our live set and recorded material...
You've had a busy year, what are the highlights?
Releasing an EP and going through the whole process of doing our own independant release has been awesome, we feel like we've learnt a lot about how to fend for yourself. Getting out on tour has also been great fun, it was a bit of a mind boggle because we havent really been at it all that long so to have got the opportunities we have had has been really satisfying as we have been living out of each others pockets working really hard on our craft over the past year. We have been in the studio in the past couple of weeks demoing and that has also been a big highlight as we are pretty stoked at some the material we are writing which is probably a product of being busy, we feel like a pretty strong unit at the moment, although we still have a shit load of work to do, we arent where we want to be yet.
What's the Perth music scene like?
Good fun but isolated, somebody commented to me the other week that Perth bands talk about touring the eastern states like it's going to India, to us small town folk is does kind of feel like that sometimes.
So what do you think of your Unearthed J AWARD nomination?
We were happy enough with Triple J just playing our music so to get a nomination and some recognition is awesome, it's certainly made us feel like we have to step up so we are slaving away hard working on our abs to look good for the awards.
What's coming up in the future?
We have a bit coming up we have a mini tour the first weekend of December (this weekend) then we have a New Years show with some good mates and just got asked to play a big festival in the new year which we are really excited about. We are in the studio next week laying down some more tracks for an EP then we head out on tour again in March to promote that. We are aiming to release our debut album in the middle of next year, we are just over half way through demos so it's pretty exciting as we are totally stoked with where we are heading.
Australian music is?
Just like every other country but probably a little less lame I would think. I think we are a jack of all trades, we seem to do everything pretty well!
