Interview: 23 July 2012
Tell us about your music - how did you develop your sound?
Well I guess the band originally developed from the blues. I have a deep love of the blues and a sort of unavoidable addiction to it, which means it will always creep through and be some sort of influence in the creation process, perhaps we will move into a more explicitly blues sound at some point in the future? But right now it's a real blend of heavier kind of blues punk and "stoner" aspects contrasting distinct melodies and more emotional music I suppose. It's hard to summarise because what most listeners know of our music is a very specific sound which is based on two tracks I suppose, when really it's a lot more varied. We have always wanted the freedom to move across genres to be as creative as possible, but under the chief principal of being a rock'n'roll band. The sound developed naturally, obviously from influence and inspiration, and also really become as objective as possible when developing the song writing process.
You’re one of the winners of our Splendour In The Grass competition. What can Splendour revelers expect from the Kingswood live show?
YES!!! WE WON SPLENDOUR!! HOLY SHIT!!! WOW!! We can't believe it. Honestly. Revellers can expect that we'll be doing our damn best to put on our best ever show. I mean put yourself in our shoes...with an opportunity to open arguably one of , if not THE best festival in Australia, you can bet your bottom dollar that we'll be going all out and pulling all the stops.
What are you most looking forward to about Splendour In The Grass? Who are you psyched to see?
Festival vibe. The experience. The experience for Splendour Unearthed Winners, which only a few ever get to experience. Opening the festival. Losing our minds. JACK WHITE. AT THE DRIVE IN. SMASHING PUMPKINS. BLOC PARTY. BAND OF SKULLS. AZEALIA BANKS. LANA DEL REY. DZ DEATHRAYS. POND. TAME IMPALA. HUSKY. FATHER JOHN MISTY. NINA LAS VEGAS. EMMA LOUISE>>>>>>>KINGSWOOD<<<<<<<<<<<<
What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?
Our manager Dave Powell - "write great songs"...well that's a very summarised version of the actual conversation/s but that's it in a nutshell. Also many other conversations about being good people and striving for greatness, working hard, and boxing, and love and life and death and all the things in-between.................... "write great songs".
What’s coming up in 2012?
Heaps of exciting stuff. Of course SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS!!! Followed by touring with OWL EYES AND STONEFIELD (bit of an odd mix with us there isn't it...odd is good), also simultaneously touring with BOY IN A BOX. Then we've got a few rural dates of our own in Victoria before BIGSOUND in Brisbane which is going to be rad. Then hopefully we have a writing/recording break as we've got a whole bunch of songs waiting to be completed from our last session with Lindsay Gravina, so we'll book some time in at Birdland and cap that off. Then Queenscliff, and hopefully all the super festivals to bring in the new year!!!!!
Australian music is...
...sick! Listen to Triple J and community radio and tell me I'm wrong. Where else can you find such a diverse range of exciting music? You want good soul? You got it! You want good electro? You got it! You want good indie? Truckloads. You want good electro indie? Heaps. You want good folk? Plenty. You want good rock'n'roll? The best. Rap? It's all there. Pop?.......There's even great pop. We have it all and we win. Well done Australians. So many super bands and artists kicking arse around the world. Who are we kidding. Because that's what music is...isn't it?! Worldly..global..universal?! Ethereal. Win. Love.
