We absolutely fell in love with their track 'Empty Hands' and now Brisbane 5-piece Art Of Sleeping are back with another indie rock gem 'Above The Water'. These guys are killing it in 2012!

Interview: 18 June 2012
Tell us about your music - how did you develop your sound?
When we first got together we were just meeting up to play music that we liked. We are kind of lucky because we got the chance to find our feet musically and develop naturally away from any pre-conceived idea of what our sound should become. In saying that, there has always been a conscious effort for us to be ourselves and to play music that has an element of sincerity to it. While we are still a relatively new artist we feel like we are starting to find our voice as individual musicians and as a group so we are always excited to see how that grows and develops through time.
What’s the Art Of Sleeping live show like?
Playing live is by far our favorite part of the musical process! There is nothing better than performing in an engaged and intimate atmosphere. We try to incorporate a huge variety of dynamics into our set, from ambient soulful sections to climatic percussive instrumental builds.
What are some of your highlights of the Art Of Sleeping story so far?
There have been so many amazing things over the last few years that we will never forget – the amount we’ve learned about music and each other has been invaluable. Probably the best day in our band’s life was when ‘Empty Hands’ was added to triple J rotation. I think we had an idea of what doors it could open, but it has really done so much more than we expected. We feel that the timing is perfect – we’re confident and excited about releasing our forthcoming EP and can’t wait to take our live show across Australia!
Tell us about the bands and people in the Brisbane music community that inspire you.
It is no secret that in the past Brisbane has been seen as a bit of an underdog as far as live music goes. There is no doubt though that the music scene here is quickly growing and evolving. It would be impossible to talk about producers without mentioning our good friend Yanto Browning who has been working with us on our upcoming EP. It might sound like a cop out but there are so many talented and inspiring artists here that it would be a shame to list just a few and not give credit were credit is due.
What’s coming up in 2012?
To support the release of our single ‘Above the Water,’ we are heading off for an East Coast tour starting this Friday in Sydney – we’ll also be visiting Brisbane, Mackay (River Sessions Festival) and Melbourne. Also, our upcoming EP will be released in the next few months, which I’m sure will see us on the road again. There are a few more festivals on the cards as well which is something we are VERY excited about.
Australian music is...
...growing, expanding and we are very proud and excited to be part of it.
