Interview: 28 May 2010
Tell us about your music – how did you develop sound?
We started singing as soon as we could talk, but as soon as we started listening to other twin artists like Meg and Dia and Tegan and Sara we saw it more as another thing we could do together. We both Started playing guitar when we were about 13 and played ever since. We are influenced by a lot of different genres of music and had been in a band, but school was really busy at the time so it didn’t work out. We wrote a song at school camp in year 9 and it was the first time we ever wrote a proper song, and since then have been working on our own songs. We write about our lives and memories. From year 9 we entered every school talent quest and battle of the bands but lost every time. We covered songs we liked, we sang stuff by unknown bands so it was really hard to get everyone into it. it wasn’t until 2009 when we sang 'Hot and Cold' by Katy Perry that we finally got a good response, probably because we have similar vocals to Katy Perry and she is someone we really like. on the last day of winter 2009 we wrote 'Wintertime' about everything that we did and then we sang it shortly after at our school battle of the bands...and won.
Tell us about your high school – where do you play/learn music?
We learnt music up until grade 7 because it was a compulsory subject. From there on it was more of a hobby, we learnt guitar for about 6 months and taught ourselves and had about 2 singing lessons with a weird woman who talked about balloons. The guitar teacher from our school and our art teacher are very supportive and listened to our songs and encouraged us. We have been influenced by many of our friends who are in bands, who have helped us by lending us guitars or teaching us a few things.
Have you played live before – what can we expect from a live show? We have played live several times at school and if Youtube counts as live, then we are on there too. You can expect acoustic guitars and some bad microphone setup. But generally we like to put on a good show. Expect dancing...bad dancing.
What’s coming up in the future?
We have written a new song, and are recording that soon. Other than that, just writing and playing live shows from my bedroom. We are currently finishing yr 12 and after that we want to go work in japan on the ski fields.
Australian music is?
Australian music is good, loud, live shows. Alot of dancing, singing along and good lyrics.
