Interview: 20 June 2011
Tell us about your music - how did you develop your sound?
I'm not really sure of the 'how' part, but it sure has developed. I guess over time you just get a clearer picture of the sort of music you want to create and in turn it becomes a little easier to put into practice.

Your music references travel and destinations – what influence has that had on your music?
Although startling, none of us have any real affiliation with Zimbabwe. The destination in the song really represents any exotic and far-away location, and somewhere that you can see yourself slipping away from society and into the abyss. And hey, it rhymes with holiday!

Has sharing a stage with Aussie greats like Wolfmother, Dappled Cities, Miami Horror, The Scare, Grafton Primary & Philadelphia Grand Jury influenced your live show?
We have learned a lot over the past year or so and have really relished the chance to play with some of the big players in the Australian music scene. I guess playing with those bands really pushes you to try and achieve the same level of professionalism that you see from those guys night after night. A lot of bands have passion, but I think it is that element of professionalism that sets great bands apart.

What can punters expect from a New Navy gig?
We really like to have fun and try and represent our recorded songs in new and exciting ways. At the end of the day we want the punters to have a great time, a bit of a dance and really enjoy themselves.

Tell us about the bands, producers and people in the Sydney music community that inspire you.
Our good friends The Bungalows are a great band coming through the Sydney scene at the moment. We have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with them a few times now and they always deliver the goods! Straight up, no bullshit bunch of blokes that rock.

What’s coming up in 2011?
We're not really too sure. The start of the year has gone better than any of us had planned and we are still on a real high. We have just released our debut EP and we would love to take our live show back down to Melbourne and possibly up to QLD if the bank accounts permit.

Australian music is?
...really fucking cool.
