Interview: 6 July 2009
Tell us about your music – how did you develop your sound?
I developed my sound through a bad sleeping pattern, staying up till 3am playing synthesizers with headphones.. Listening to as much music possible, as many bands as I can get a hold of and find out about. Then by following the steady path carved for me by all of my influences combined, just making sounds that I like to hear. I think it's important to develop a direction for your music.

You describe yourselves as an art collective – tell us more…
Well, I look at music in the same way I'd look at any form of creative and artistic expression. I like to think that if you are an artistic person in one way such as music or painting for example, there is usually quite a chance you could be good at other forms of artistic expression. It seems to be proven over and over again when you see drawings from musicians like John Lennon and Daniel Johnston, or take David Lynch for example.. He's known for his artistically driven work as a film director and a screenwriter, but then he also composes sound tracks and his drawings and cartoons are incredible and individual. Throughout all Lynch's pieces of creative work, they all seem to show his vision and his own personal artistic ideas, there seems to be a close relationship between them all.
I think if you're releasing yourself creatively, the different forms of art you choose usually seem to cross over. So the reason I talk of Oh Ye Denver Birds as an art collective is because I have ideas apart from music, after the music is made I have only arrived at the next stage of creativity, where i can make visual clips to accompany the tracks, or whatever really, photos, paintings, concepts.. and most of the time friends and people who are interested in what we do will help out, so i began calling it somewhat of an art collective.

What is your live show like?
Haha! Im actually not sure.. Id like to think it's quite interesting.. We’ve only just started playing shows recently.. so we are still anticipating how it's going to go. I do know we have alot of equipment.. 5 guitar amps.. 2 keyboards.. 2 glockenspiels... a table for pots and pans, 5 singers.. hahah. But yeh i can see our shows being quite fun, probably not as danceable as some bands around, but id like to think we are a mesmerizing band that creates an impact. Some of our songs are a bit haunting and surrounded in reverb, but they all seem to have the element of being uplifting.

What’s coming up in the future?
Well, I’ve been endlessly recording songs in my bedroom for the last year or two. So with the help of some of my creative friends who are making all the CD covers for the release out of cloth and buttons (limited), Id like to get the CD circulating through Brisbane and other places hopefully. The release will be called "Sun Chant" named after a quite moving experience that i had on new years morning at Woodford Folk Festival.. so please let me know if you'd like a copy! It should be finished this week! We also seem to have alot of shows being booked over the next few months, so it will be good to play them and keep moving forward with more shows, hopefully interstate if we can afford it.

Australian music is?
Dirty Three.

CW Stoneking at a little pub in Eumundi called Joes Waterhole. "Snowman" out of perth.. Oh! and Nick Cave, Nick Cave!!

And I'm sure hundreds more...

Sometimes with music and bands, where ever they come from... I'd rather see them being sincere and real rather than for alternative desires. Australian music is brimming with talent, and the surprising amount of original bands coming out of this country doesn't amaze me. This place is beautiful.
