FisherKing make dreamy roots music and have won our FUSE festival competition. They'll be playing in front of a bunch of industry reps at the EXPLODE showcase in Adelaide on March 4th.
Interview: 19 February 2009
Tell us about your music, how did you develop your sound?
I‘d like to say that we decided on a sound and wrote songs along those ideas but I don’t know if we’ve ever sought after something particular or just did what came most naturally to us. We’re just excited to play music! We’ve definitely been influenced along the years by some amazing acts and all of us in FisherKing have got very diverse musical backgrounds and tastes, so we all bring such different ideas to the table when we arrange a song. We try to keep an open mind and explore very idea before we decide on its direction. So I guess we’ve never felt our sound to be developed but we treat it as something that we’re always developing.
What can the FUSE audience expect of you at the EXPLODE showcase?
I don’t know yet... we’ll throw something together on the day. But hopefully something they’ll like. I’d hate to waste a trip.
How do you feel about playing in front of a bunch of international and national industry reps?
Ummmm, maybe a little nervous. We’ve never had such an amazing opportunity like this and we want to make the most of it. But at the same time we don’t want to over think it. We want to get up there, play our best and give it just as much as we do at every other show. Hopefully they’ll see we’re just a bunch of down to earth, really good-looking and talented guys and they’ll give us a freakin’ record deal. Love that.
What’s coming up in the future?
We’re just about to release our EP in a couple of weeks, so look out for that one. We’ve got a whole bunch of shows planned for March and April and we’ll hopefully fill up the books for the rest of the year too. We’re just about to launch our new web site, which is looking very tasty and if it all goes well, we’re hoping to record our album by the end of the year. Quite a list...
Australian music is?
Exciting right now and something to be proud of. We’re loving Van She, The Presets, Cut Copy and Lior is always amazing. We’ve played a few shows in Melbourne recently and we were amazed by how alive the music scene is down there. But now we’re keen to get out there and experience the rest of Australia.
