Tell us about your music - how did you develop your sound?
With us less is more. We're pretty minimalistic. If everyone plays their instruments well enough, you don't need so many of them. We started out with just an acoustic guitar and two voices so our sound came from us trying to use what little we had and not be boring. We try to make people feel like there's more going on than just guitar and vocals. It's a heap of groove based pop with an acoustic, folk twist. A kind of jazz/folk/pop.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?
"Don't get fat. That shit never comes off!" - Daniel Denholm (Producing our debut album)

How would you describe a Microwave Jenny live show?
We try to make our shows an intimate affair. Just a week ago we did a show where the entire suburb had a blackout literally 10 seconds before we were about to go on stage. So we ended up walking down into the center of the floor with a few candles and 300 people sat in a circle around us on the floor and we did our entire set completely unplugged. It suited us really well and ended up being one of our most memorable gigs ever.

Microwave Jenny are an indigenous duo. Are there other bands, producers and people in the indigenous music community that inspire you?
We really admire Dan Sultan and his team. We relate to a lot of the struggles he's faced as an indigenous artist trying find a place in contemporary music. As soon as people hear your indigenous they expect you to sing in language or play world music on didgeridoo. Your constantly being put on "indigenous" stages at festivals and your CDs are put in the World Music section. Dan is one good example of what it is to be a young Aboriginal adult living in the world today and it inspires us to be one too.

What’s coming up for Microwave Jenny in 2011?
We've been working away on our first album for a little while now. The rest of 2011 will see us finishing that off ready for an early 2012 release. There's also a few festivals lined up between now and the end of the year and a few supporting shows with some really exciting artists for us.

Australian music is...?
A super exciting and intriguing thing to be a part of right now. There's no real definition for it. You can't say any one thing is Australian music. The great thing about that is you also can't say that any one thing isn't Australian music.
