Interview: 5 August 2008
Describe your sound?
At present, our sound is predominantly indie-pop with a light blend of elements from electronica and post-rock. By layering these ideas together we try to achieve a pop centered, yet spacious sound... The kind of music that reveals different little bits to you depending on how you want to listen to it.

What were you all doing before forming?
We were all doing some kind of study at uni prior to forming Bird Automatic. For the majority of us, this is our first band. However, Zeyd and John Henry played in a few bands during high school. John-Henry's old band ended up disbanding, and Zeyd's has recently re-formed. This has made way for our new bass player, Alex, whom we met whilst she was playing in another Sydney band.

What is your music making process?
Like most bands, ideas are usually brought to practice so that the band can contribute to the development of a song. It normally just starts with a couple of guitar parts and flows from there...

Tell us about your live gigs - you've played some impressive support gigs..
We've been lucky enough to play some great shows. A highlight was when supported the Shout Out Louds on their tour last year. Funnily enough, they were some of the nicest bands we've ever played with. The Shout Out Louds have that sunny Swedishness to them and it's great to know that it's not a put on. A close second would have to be Eddie Argos yelling "Bird Automatic - Top of the Pops" mid song for Art Brut. We've also played great festivals such as Playground Weekender and Essential Festival. Our own shows have been really successful of late, with a few of them selling out for no good reason.

What have you got planned for the future?
We are about to start recording our newer material for demos and/or a new release. It's a little too soon to tell, but we'll definitely be touring towards the end of the year.

Australian music is?
...not nearly appreciated enough. We've met so many great bands that really have fantastic songs. On a whole I don't think it is as pigeonholed as it once was. I think music all over the world is kind of diversifying, as bedrooms become recording studios allowing small bands to go global via the web. These are interesting times.
